I love little hidden gems tucked away in industrial parks, and Cozy's Express is one of them.  I had lunch at Cozy's recently and the food was good, portions were huge, and staff were really friendly.

From the outside, the place looks a little worn, and the inside looks like those truck stops at the side of the highway, complete with all sorts of old license plates up on the walls.  However, the food is definitely a notch above the typical greasy spoons.

They serve the usual diner fare like hamburgers, club sandwiches, Western sandwiches, chicken fingers, etc.  But they also have 3 specials everyday that change weekly, which I think gives you the best value - for $12.45 you get a soup, salad, and your choice of main with fries, rice or mashed potatoes.  On the day that I went, the specials were chicken stir-fry, liver with bacon and onions, and a veggie burger.  The soups of the day were Tomato Macaroni and Cream of Mushroom.

I'm not a huge fan of liver, but apparently I need more iron in my diet, so I ordered it and figured that if I didn't like it, I could at least eat the soup, salad and fries ;)  I chose the Tomato Macaroni soup, and I couldn't believe that I got to choose my salad and was able to get more than one type.  I honestly expected that the salad would be a garden salad with mostly iceberg lettuce.  But no, I got to choose from vinegar based coleslaw, beets and apple, bean salad, creamy potato salad, and macaroni salad.  I got a mixture of the first three (although in the future I might just get a bit of everything).

The soup was mostly macaroni, celery, carrots, peppers and onions with just a bit of tomato broth.  This is exactly the way I like my soups - mostly solids, minimal liquids!  And it was tasty to boot!  Not overly salty and it was full of flavour.  I would definitely order this soup again.

The salads were ok.  They were a little too wet for my liking, but I really enjoyed the variety.

My main dish was huge.  I got two very large pieces of liver covered in sauteed onions and bacon bits.  The onions and bacon actually did a really good job at masking the taste of the liver, and you know what, I enjoyed my meal, despite not liking liver.  The fries were hot and crispy, and they sprinkle some sort of Cajun spices on them or something, which gave them a slight kick.  The fries were a tiny bit mealy, but still good.

I also liked that they gave me the gravy on the side instead of pouring it all over everything. I actually just dipped my fries in it, instead of pouring it over the liver. It was a bit runny, but still good.

I think the guys in the kitchen were trying out some new things because they were passing around some little breadsticks stuffed with either cheese or chocolate sauce.  I got to try one of the chocolate ones and it was good.  It tasted like a chocolate brioche.

Service was really friendly.  The servers even call you pet names like "doll" and "sweetie" like the waitresses do at truck stops, lol. The blond one looks like Dolly Parton too!  The soups and salads are pre-made, so they come out with lightning speed, which I appreciated because I didn't have breakfast that day and was starving.

Apparently the restaurant has been around since 1983.  It's in an industrial park not too far from St. Laurent Mall.  There's lots of free parking in their private lot behind the restaurant - but watch out for the numerous potholes!

I really hope the next time I'm there one of the specials is the Hot Chicken Sandwich.  They always have Hot Chicken Sandwich on the menu, but when it's the special you get a soup and salad for only $0.50 more, lol ;)
